Health & Endurance
Medical History + my mission to help others
I had bad knees from the age of 13, and then in 1996 I injured my back so badly that I was told I'd never run
again. Stupidly, I accepted that diagnosis and spent hundreds of pounds over a period of 18 months on
chiropractic treatment to relieve the pain. A 'cure' was never talked about. Eventually I saw a physio,
who gave me some simple exercises to do. I was able to begin running again, but my knees were still a
problem. I then met Dr Liz Miller, who recommended Egoscues and some dietary changes (less simple carbohydrates, more greens, plenty of omega-3
oils).
When on Tony Robbins' Life Mastery in 2003, I learnt about Stu Mittleman and his running programme. I bought a
heart-rate monitor and invested several weeks running in what he calls a Most Aerobic Pace (MAP). I made the
transition to fat-burning exercise and I was away! The 2004 London Marathon was my first race and I've
never looked back. I've done seven marathons, the last six in under four hours. I can't tell you
what a joy it is to train this way. I can run a half-marathon and feel fresher at the end than at the
start!
It's become a bit of a mission of mine to help other people with back and knee problems and to help healthier
people get more from their running. I recommend you read Slow Burn by Stu Mittleman. Several people have
taken me up on it and it's changed their lives for the better. If I can do it, so can you!
